Quillfeather Hall

Quillfeather Hall

Quillfeather Hall publishes recordings of piano works that are in the public domain — music whose copyright expired long ago, returned to everyone.

The recordings are made without a human performer. The notes are encoded from a public-domain printed edition. The playing — phrasing, dynamics, pedalling, the small timing irregularities that keep music from sounding mechanical — is produced by deterministic software from a written set of parameters, and played by a commercially licensed virtual piano.

No generative AI or machine-learning model takes any part in making the audio.

We state all of this plainly because it is unusual, and because a listener has a right to know what they are hearing. The method is described in full on How these recordings are made, including the one place where AI genuinely is involved.
